School Lunch Programs

When approaching your local school board, you will need a lot of nutritional information in order to convince the board that a VEG DAY MONDAY for a school lunch is a healthy recommendation. Of course, we also would like them to carry vegan options throughout the week. (It is ironic that we have to convince them that vegan options are healthy when you consider the regular fare that is offered.)

The best information you can offer members of the school board is a booklet “Vegetarian Options for School Lunch Programs” from PCRM, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine that contains Facts & References to books and studies. You may get the booklet by ordering by mail: 5100 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, Suite 400, Washington, DC 20016. For more information about vegetarian options for school lunches, check out their website: www.HealthySchoolLunches.org. For general information on PCRM, check out: www.PCRM.org. Their telephone number is: 202-686-2210.

Contained in Vegetarian Options:

1. Vegetarian Diets and Children’s Health – discusses the need to include more vegetables, fruits, and other healthful high-fiber foods and mentions that children are gaining excess weight and that twenty-five percent of children ages 5 to 10 have high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, or other signs of heat problems.
